Technical SEO sounds intimidating, but for most business websites it comes down to a short list of fundamentals. Get these right and your content has a fair chance to rank. Get them wrong and even the best content stays invisible.
1. Make sure Google can find and index your pages
- Set up Google Search Console and verify your domain. It's free and it's where Google tells you about problems.
- Submit an XML sitemap — a list of the pages you want indexed.
- Check robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking important pages. A leftover "Disallow: /" from development is a surprisingly common mistake.
- Use the Pages report in Search Console to see which pages are indexed and why others aren't.
2. One URL per page
The same page reachable at several addresses (with and without "www", with and without a trailing slash, http and https) splits your ranking signals.
- Redirect everything to one preferred version with 301 redirects.
- Add a canonical tag to each page pointing to its preferred URL.
3. HTTPS everywhere
An SSL certificate is a basic requirement. Make sure every page loads on https, and http automatically redirects to it.
4. Speed
Slow pages lose visitors and rankings. Check your pages with PageSpeed Insights and focus on:
- Images — compress them and use modern formats like WebP; set width and height.
- Too many scripts — every chat widget, tracker and slider adds weight.
- Caching and a CDN for static files.
- Good hosting — cheap shared hosting can be the bottleneck.
5. Mobile-first
Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap, and nothing overflows the screen.
6. Clean structure
- One clear H1 per page that describes it.
- Logical H2/H3 subheadings.
- Descriptive title tags and meta descriptions for each page — unique, not copied.
- Readable URLs:
/services/seobeats/page.php?id=17. - Internal links between related pages so both users and Google can move around.
7. Structured data
Structured data (schema markup) helps search engines understand what a page is about — your organisation, articles, FAQs, products. It can make your results more informative in search.
8. Fix broken things
- 404 errors on pages that used to exist — redirect them to the closest relevant page.
- Broken internal links.
- Redirect chains where one redirect leads to another and another.
Build on the foundation
Technical SEO isn't a one-time job; sites change and new issues appear. A quick monthly check in Search Console catches most problems early.
Once the foundation is solid, content and links do the heavy lifting. If you'd like an audit of your site, our SEO services start with exactly this technical review.
