For clinics, coaching centres, restaurants, service providers and shops, the most valuable search result is often not a website at all. It is the map pack — the three businesses Google shows with a map, rating and "Call" button when someone searches "dentist near me" or "CA in Jaipur".
Getting into that list is what local SEO is about, and your Google Business Profile (GBP) is at the centre of it.
How Google chooses local results
Google looks at three broad things:
- Relevance — does your profile match what the person searched?
- Distance — how close are you to the searcher or the location in their query?
- Prominence — how well known and trusted is your business (reviews, mentions, website)?
You can't change distance, but you can influence relevance and prominence a lot.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Search for your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it; if not, create one. Verify it through the method Google offers — video, phone or postcard. Unverified profiles rarely rank well.
Step 2: Fill in everything, accurately
- Business name — your real name. Stuffing keywords into it breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Primary category — the most specific one that fits ("Pediatric dentist", not just "Dentist", if accurate). Add secondary categories for other services.
- Address and service area — exact, and matching your website.
- Hours — including holiday hours.
- Phone, website and WhatsApp.
- Services and products — list them with short descriptions.
- Description — plain language: who you help, where, and how.
Step 3: Keep your details consistent everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be identical on your website, Google profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook and other directories. Inconsistent details confuse Google and customers.
Step 4: Build genuine reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and whether people call you.
- Ask every happy customer — a short link or QR code at the counter makes it easy.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and quickly.
- Never buy fake reviews or offer incentives for positive ones. It violates Google's policies and customers notice.
Step 5: Post and add photos regularly
Add real photos of your premises, team and work. Use GBP posts for offers, events and updates. An active profile signals a real, operating business.
Step 6: Support it with your website
- Add your address and a Google Map on your contact page.
- Create a page for each main service and, if you serve several areas, useful location pages (not copy-pasted ones).
- Make sure the site is fast and works well on mobile.
Track what matters
GBP Insights shows searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Watch these monthly — calls and direction requests are the closest thing to real customers.
